about

WikiRiffs Brighton, UK

WikiRiffs is a YouTube-based songwriting project which began in September 2010. Each week (more or less) I click "Random Article" on Wikipedia and write a song about whatever comes up first. Whilst the articles that appear are mostly pretty obscure, I strive to make the quality of songwriting and video-making as high as possible. ... more

Track Name: Trimethoprim
Doctor, doctor tell me what should I do
I have the symptoms of a U-T-I
And all I wish is to kiss it goodbye
Is there anything you can prescribe
to revive my spirits and eliminate this unwelcome visitor
or are the drugs in short supply

‘cause I need medication bacteriostatic, theraputic and antibiotic
used in treatment and prophylaxis, to keep infected tracts distracted
Dihydrofolate reductase is maintaining its hold on my body, in phases
you erase it

Just have some faith, oh my patient son, there’s hope
We have the agents to help you cope
There’s no better course of reactionary resource
to force the bacteria out of him
than prescribing imbibing trimethoprim

Doctor, doctor thank you for this advice
Here are your dues, I’ve paid the price for now
Swore I’d be rid of this somehow
Is there anything you can suggest
to lay to rest this case and to displace this test of my best intentions
this is the worst I would allow

‘cause I need medication bacteriostatic, theraputic and antibiotic
used in treatment and prophylaxis, to keep infected tracts distracted
Dihydrofolate reductase is maintaining its hold on my body, in phases
you erase it

Just have some faith, oh my patient son, there’s hope
We have the agents to help you cope
There’s no better course of reactionary resource
to force the bacteria out of him
Prescribing imbibing trimethoprim until it’s gone.
Track Name: Sean Snyder
Flashback to kindergarten, Sean is playing in the park
with his father who would rather they be home before dark
But Sean’s feet are pounding the dirt and for what it’s worth
his daddy’s proud of the little boy to whom his wife gave birth
So he’s growing up and showing off his skills and he’s allowed
To play in junior teams and he can hear the screams of the crowd
and in his dreams they’re getting louder and he’s raising his hands
to the people in his mind who line the seats in the stands

He plays at Greenville, Texas high school as a punter and a kicker
He tried his hand at baseball but that didn’t seem to stick
his skin was thicker than that, began to quicken in pace
it clicks and suddenly he’s six one and he’s onto your case
An All-American man with a numerical nine
waiting on his future jersey and at first he’s doing fine
‘cause now he’s toeing the line and he’s thirsty for fame
Gotta rehearse his final plays and win his praise for the game

So what’s a guy to do when he’s at Kansas State U
And it’s true his dad’s the coach and he’s approached and it’s due
to a sense of duty that he’s booting up and taking to the field
he grinds his heels into the dirt and if he’s hurt he has to heal
and you feel a sense of pride when you know he’s on your side,
‘cause you know he’s gonna try hard and your smile’s pretty wide
‘cause you’re kinda forced to use him ‘cause you’re at fourth and ten
he’s gotta kick the frickin’ thing and let the defensive team defend

Oh, Sean Snyder, what have you got to hide
‘cause you’ve decided to call it time
and you’re retiring in your prime
Oh, Sean Snyder, when you’re leaving it all behind
You’ve seen better days and you find
that your mind’s set on calling it quits
before it all falls to bits
Track Name: The Cheyenne Indians: Their History And Lifeways
During day my pen is scratching
catching details, missing nothing
night falls and the flames are burning
embers to the sky returning

I am investigating the historic
feels euphoric, they have
No reservations in every sense
My work condensed
in oh-eight into one volume,
which told the same story
non-fictional, glorious
freed from all pretense

Last of a nomadic people gathered on the plains
From all their ancestors, they alone remain
I have taken time to learn their history and life ways
Learned of times where none were spared and none were saved

Here am I, a so-called American man
spending time here among the Cheyenne
Track Name: Morrat
The invaders came to face the Empire, crossing spans
of space to annihilate any trace of my best laid plans
Super-skrull was defeated, they nullified his efforts to invade
Taking the form of Franklin Storm was the last mistake he made

And though they kept his fire at bay I must acquire their power ray
I’ll lay a trap for them to find the real Franklin left behind
explosives strapped to his chest and set to blow when they arrive

Bye-bye little brothers, I hope you know the worst is yet to come
I will track the fantastic four back to the world that they came from
They may have destroyed Galactus
but they’ll never defeat me
And my face will be the last thing they see

The king will never last if he is overthrown
I’m primed to take his place now all the seeds are sown
But alas my plans were thwarted by Reed Richards and his team
Wresting control of the ray, my goal, and ending my perfect scheme

And though they think my fate is sealed the twist is yet to be revealed
Amidst the fight I shifted shape to grant myself a swift escape
They executed someone else and I am still alive

Bye-bye little brothers, I hope you know the worst is yet to come
I will track the fantastic four back to the world that they came from
They may have destroyed Galactus
but they’ll never defeat me
And my face will be the last thing they see

The world will burn and all will learn
Warlord Morrat is not a forgiver
The empire will fall, I’ve fooled them all
they thought mine was the head of the corpse they delivered
they were wrong and now I’m coming home

Bye-bye little brothers, I hope you know the worst is yet to come
I will track the fantastic four back to the world that they came from
They may have destroyed Galactus
but they’ll never defeat me
And my face will be the last thing they see

Track Name: Tinechong River
The stones moan, banging like the beating drum
And the banks swell, telling you the rain has come
A slow flow melt into the sea and is gone
But the Tinechong River goes on and on

Many aeons ago, when the Earth was formed, the seas covered the planet and not a speck of land had yet breached the surface. Then, slowly, islands formed; then countries; then continents; until the water that remained was shepherded into the oceans we now know today.
But the water seeped back into the land as a river, bringing fresh water to the beasts and birds that now dwelt upon the shores. Finally, relentlessly, it would make its way back to the ocean, returning to the place from whence it came.

Winding through the land and finding any way it can
to reach the ocean and the sand that lie upon the shores of Guam
Slowly flowing forward, never knowing of the stories that are told
when all the world is calm

The stones moan, banging like the beating drum
And the banks swell, telling you the rain has come
A slow flow melt into the sea and is gone
But the Tinechong River goes on and on

The people who came to populate the banks of the river were a kind folk, showing respect to the current as it washed clean their clothes and cleansed their bodies. Some of them had come great distances, and some of them new nothing of their origins, but the waters of the river welcomed them and fed them just the same.

Washing clean the wounds of all the people left marooned
upon the shore, under the moon which hangs unmoving in the sky
Pouring from adoring hands upon the Earth, which always understands
and never questions why

The stones moan, banging like the beating drum
And the banks swell, telling you the rain has come
A slow flow melt into the sea and is gone
But the Tinechong River goes on and...
Track Name: Thurston Dart
Bob Dart got an early head start
studied keyboards, quite smart, the world his oyster
he was soon appointed a
Professor, quite a snappy dresser
proving his prowess to his peers
He’s the one who always hears

Music from the early years ringing in his ears
as he plays, as he plays
channeling the rhythm, the composers’ ghosts are with him
they hold his hands for every phrase

Thurston Dart was a Musicologist
With a thirst for knowledge and a taste for art
Played the Harpsichord and recorded all
of the continuo parts
for L’Oiseau-Lyre’s label,
he would conduct when he was able
no stranger to the writer’s table
and ageing well, Robert Thurston Dart

Mozart always close to his heart
Working from a chord chart, scored notation
or less informed recordings
playing things by ear straying when it’s clear
portraying more expression
staying wth the chord progression

Teaching the composers who’ll be known after he goes
and it’s clear, and it’s clear
He’s highly influential, and his students have potential
To play him what he wants to hear

Thurston Dart was a Musicologist
With a thirst for knowledge and a taste for art
Played the Harpsichord and recorded all
of the continuo parts
for L’Oiseau-Lyre’s label,
he would conduct when he was able
no stranger to the writer’s table
and ageing well, Robert Thurston Dart

Track Name: Dámaso Berenguer
When Cuba was still owned by Spain
The monarchy still fit to reign
A man was born who later became
a minister of war
Morocco bound in uniform
and rising up to raise a storm
reform of the dictatorship
the goal that he swore

Damaso Berenguer, first Count of Xauen
First came to power when a dictator fell
His regime was lacking teeth
and the republican knife soon found its sheath
In his back and his days would end in a prison cell

Court-martialled and discharged, but soon
the king would sing a different tune
Appointing him in charge of arms
and watching over all
A minister and in his prime
Administered most of his time
in changing what was wrong to cause
the former to fall

But his dream would be left behind
he woke up one day to find
the King had fled back to Spain
Leaving his agents to swear
service to who came to power there
never returned again
Damaso was detained and
subsequently restrained
Prisoner of the new
government that was made and
left their prime minister now betrayed
What was a man to do?

Damaso Berenguer, first Count of Xauen
First came to power when a dictator fell
His regime was lacking teeth
and the republican knife soon found its sheath
In his back and his days would end in a prison cell
Track Name: Hayes MacArthur
One boy from Chicago, Illinois
studying in Maine
his Government B.A.
But those were early days
Went on to cut his teeth
at theatre companies
He was named for Helen Hayes

Hey hey Hayes MacArthur
You had a child with Ali Larter
What’s it like now you’re a father

You were a a prodigy, rebel of comedy
In Pushing Daisies and Medium
and you were on TV for the world to see
appreciate what you’ve become

Enjoy your happy ever after
Hey hey Hayes MacArthur
What’s it like now you’re a father
You had a child with Ali Larter

You both had work for screen and stage
Four years ago you were engaged
wed on your parents’ estate
August the first your chosen date
fifteen months later you became
a father, gave your son a name
swore to protect him from all harm
now you hold him in your arms

One boy from Chicago, Illinois
Making his own way
now has a family

Hey hey Hayes MacArthur
What’s it like now you’re a father
You had a child with Ali Larter
Track Name: Pfund (Surname)
It’s just a name, there’s not much in that
a picture frame, father and son both sat
under the same blue sky alive
but diff’rent games provide their drive

And there’s a third, perhaps the last
perhaps you’ve heard his name in class
looks somewhat blurred on the other side of that glass
through which he views the world
and yet his name is clear, it has survived

their name is Pfund
August Herman, Lee and Randy Pfund
And I admit, I’m happy that I’ve found
a name that seems obscure to me
but somehow stuck around

One managed Heat, Miami’s best
They saw defeat, but every game’s a test
a testament to goals he set
In his ascent, but never met

His father pitched the Dodgers in
a ball that’s stitched with thread that’s wearing thin
the country which he loves and was living in
was warring in the East
he hadn’t even made his debut yet

A physicist, a telescope
configured to his specified detail
A man of science, full of hope
his findings wouldn’t fall apart or fail

their name is Pfund
August Herman, Lee and Randy Pfund
And I admit, I’m happy that I’ve found
a name that seems obscure to me
but somehow stuck around
Track Name: St David's Hotel and Spa
In the bay of Cardiff I would argue there’s a Spa hotel
that’s far removed from competition
We’re dining at the bar then meeting up in the Roald Dahl room
owned by Rocco ‘til its acquisition

In 2007 by the principal hotels group
Snapped up in one fell swoop
Now eleven years old
Its class is unsurpassed and here’s your proof
I’ve heard the sail-topped roof
Is quite a sight to behold

St David’s Hotel and Spa
Deserves each and every star
prestigious and so far
our stay has been sensational
For business or for pleasure
There’s a gym for sport or leisure
a pool for recreational use
So how could we refuse

There’s doubles, twins and suites, and in the evening we could eat cuisine
from locally sourced recipes
The health and beauty spa may seem a little bit bourgeois
But they have a range of therapies

Located on Havannah Street
It overlooks the mermaid quays
It boasts meeting facilities
which seat two hundred seventy

St David’s Hotel and Spa
Deserves each and every star
prestigious and so far
our stay has been sensational
For business or for pleasure
There’s a gym for sport or leisure
a pool for recreational use
So how could we refuse
Track Name: Ollie Bejma (Acoustic)
September nineteen-oh-seven
a baseball player is born in South Bend, Indiana
He sits on his father's knee
and says Daddy,
I want to play in the major league

He makes his debut in thirty-four
his team come away with a losing score
he plays short stop, second and third base
he doesn't have a permanent place

How could Ollie Bejma win us the ball game
He's a major league player but an unknown name
A baseball infielder, glove and bat wielder
waiting for the hall of fame
waiting for the call of fame

He gets picked up by the white sox
He bats in forty-four and rocks 'til october
He quits in thirty-nine
he's had his time
no better year to resign

His name was in Peanuts in seventy-four
forty years after that first score
he played short stop for St. Paul
but that would be his curtain call

How could Ollie Bejma win us the ball game
He's a major league player but an unknown name
A baseball infielder, glove and bat wielder
waiting for the hall of fame
waiting for the call of fame
Track Name: Thymosins
The product of a research lab, found within an active preparation
Galvanised in Galveston, Fraction five was made in isolation

Fraction five contained over forty small peptides
biological responses modified
Alpha one and beta four identified
Alpha one and beta four iden-ti-fied

These thymosins are small proteins, mostly found in tissues from an animal
Individuals characterised, uses so diverse and biological

Unrestricted by the thymus, quite unusual
They aren’t truly thymic hormones at all
But it helps to name them when they’re classified
But it helps to name them when they’re class-if-ied

Thymosin beta one, later named ubiquitin
ubiquitous, essential to the tissues that it’s in

In boosting the immune system, thymosins progress from the laboratory
to clinics where they’re useful in aspects of your treatment and biology

Working with the body to increase its agency
Restore your immune system functionality
It’s a forward step for your recovery
it’s a forward step for your reco-ve-ry
Track Name: Funtrip Records
We’re all young and somewhat indie
mainstream success is hard to make
beginning of the 1990s
Still shooting for our biggest break
I guess we’re going independent
Len’s latest albums co-released
with No Records backing
and another short EP

We’ve come so far
we’re not yet superstars
but still we’re aiming high
(You’ve got to learn to walk before you can fly)

It’s been a Funtrip
And you know that we know how to make Records
Turn us up a little more on your sound board
We’ve got everything to gain
There’s no getting off of this train
It’s been a fun trip
and we got what I think we all came for
We’re a label that’s able to make more
of the music we all love

Approached by a major label
We’re celebrating our success
We just got this business stable
But we’re still excited nonetheless
We’re set up and selling records
No Distribution on our side
Getting us out to the best stores
and keeping them supplied

We’ve come so far
we’re not yet superstars
but still we’re aiming high
(You’ve got to learn to walk before you can fly)

It’s been a Funtrip
And you know that we know how to make Records
Turn us up a little more on your sound board
We’ve got everything to gain
There’s no getting off of this train
It’s been a fun trip
and we got what I think we all came for
We’re a label that’s able to make more
of the music we all love

You’ve got to learn to walk before
You’ve got to learn to walk before you can fly
Track Name: Son Bonet Aerodrome
This is an S.O.S. distress call, m’aidez
we’re up here alone and we’re coasting on fumes
the cabin crew guess we’ve an hour left, they say
they’ve been estimating how much fuel we consume

You’ve been radio silent, is anybody there?
We’re ten thousand feet in the air

The radio crackles with static we’ve scanned
We’re transmitting on every frequency band
Son Bonet never gave us permission to land
we are circling, circling, circling, circling

We are the refugees of a world left in ruins
We watched from the air and we wept for our souls
Somebody help us, please, this wasn’t our doing
The situation spiralled out of control

You’re still radio silent, is anybody there?
We’re ten thousand feet in the air

Mallorca’s the last place we can escape from the horde
We packed out this plane and then skyward we soared
We promise we don’t have any zombies on board
We are circling, circling, circling, circling

You’ve been radio silent, is anybody there?
We’re now five thousand feet in the air
and all the passengers are scared
they’re wishing for the solid ground
but that’ll reach them anyhow
And even though we’re not prepared
for landing at an aerodrome
There’s no chance of us going home

This is an S.O.S. our black box recorder
may be the last place where our voices are heard
So let the record state that amid the disorder
we ran for the border and flew with the birds

They’re still radio silent, is anybody there?
We’re two thousand feet in the air
